Director: Darren Stein
The story is about two gay boys in high school who have yet to come out other then their group of friends. Which included a straight guy who everyone questioned about and a goth/rocker/I-don’t-conform-to-society girl. The two main character are Tanner (Michael J. Willett) and Brent (Paul Iacono). Brent wanted to be the Gay Best Friend (G.B.F.) to one of the top girls in the school. Tanner, on the other hand, wanted to stay in the background. It wasn’t until the Gay Straight Allience (I think that what it was called) went hunting for a gay person to join the club. They ended up using this app that gay men use to find other gay men on a map. Tanner got outed and he became the new sought out person to the “queen bees” of the school. There was Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse) who was all things beautiful and probably the most popular of the three. Then Caprice (Xosha Roquemore), queen of the minority students and the head of anything artistic. Lastly there is ‘Shley, whose real name is Ashley and really isn’t considered as cool as the other two but she has the whole Mormon student body behind her. These three fight for Tanner’s friendship. Tanner can’t decide who he wants but he struggles with the fact is outed and doesn’t know how to deal with this new found attention. Poor Brent is fading to the background and watching his old best friend live the life he wanted. By the end of the movie everyone stops fighting and it becomes this whole Mean Girls moment when Lindsey Lohan’s character decides to make a speech in front of everyone at prom. Except in this movie it was Tanner.
This movie definitely lived up to what I expected out of it. It was hilarious (at least to someone who was bored at home) and I thought the cast was amazing. Evanna Lynch, who played Luna in the Harry Potter series was in it! She even wore a cap in the movie, a little reference to HP! So exciting. Also Sasha Pieterse from Pretty Little Liar was awesome. She plays such a good mean girl! Joanna ‘JoJo’ Levesque played Soledad, the girl who outed Tanner. JoJo after all these years! I wish she sang in the movie though. Paul Iacono, the star of The Hard Times of RJ Berger did an amazing job as Brent. He made me laugh plenty of times!
My favorite character in the whole film is Brent’s mom. She knew her son was gay, but wanted to wait till he told her. She was showing how much she was okay with it before she officially found out. When Brent had no one else to go to, his mom decided to have a Mother and Son movie night watch gay movies all night. Too bad the first movie was Brokeback Mountain! Watching a sex scene with your mom? Awkward! But she was trying. I also love how she though Caprice was a drag queen.
Brent: My mom thinks your a drag queen.
Caprice: I ain’t mad at that.
This movie was definitely a must watch!
